Brussels Legal Charity Quiz

A sum of several thousand euro was raised for Avocats Sans Frontières (www.asf.be) at the Brussels Legal Charity Quiz 2007.

Eleven teams participated in the event held at the Sofitel Brussels Europe hotel on 21 January.

The contest was competitive and fun, testing each team's knowledge of a variety of subjects from Belgium to Science to Music.

Participating teams included: Covington & Burling, Cleary Gottlieb, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Hogan & Hartson, Howrey, Latham & Watkins.  Slaughter & May made a donation to ASF but were unable to attend due to last-minute work commitments.  Officials from DG Competition, DG Trade and the EFTA Surveillance Authority and members of ASF participated too.

The winners

A team of officials from the EFTA Surveillance Authority won (made up of Ólafur Einarsson, Hrafnkell Óskarsson, Laurence Van Wymeersch, Martin Haugberg and Kjell Arild Rein).

A team of DG Competition officials came second (comprising Nadia De-Souza, John Gatti, Walter Tretton, Peter Erberl and Talia Lingos).

Clifford Chance and Cleary Gottlieb tied in third place, with Clifford Chance narrowly beating Cleary Gottlieb in a "sudden death" tie-breaker to claim the third prize.

The real winners were ASF as participants made donations directly to ASF totalling 4,300 euro. ASF president Lieven Denys gave a presentation explaining the purpose of the organisation and how the money will be used in ASF's Globalisation of Justice project.

Acknowledgements

Brussels Legal would like to acknowledge the generosity of Sofitel Brussels Europe hotel in hosting the event. Mr. Bart Van Cauwelaert and his team provided excellent support for the quiz.

Aspria and Waterstones generously donated gifts to the winning teams.
